Looks like he's being punished for fighting. What's more disturbing though is that a potato is peeling potatoes.
I think it's more supposed to be an allegory for war, where killing is justified based on perceived atrocities or ideologies of the "enemy". In the end soldiers are really just potatoes peeling potatoes and using an excuse to write off the moral quandry O_o.
