Rigged Character: "Suzanne"

suzanne-rigged-ver1screen.jpgSome time ago, Michael Thoenes released a character rig under the Blender Artistic License. It's nicely done and is a fine addition your character rig library which I hope also includes Ludwig and Mancandy.

  1. It's great to get put on Blendernation.. many thanks..

Rigged Character: “Suzanne” was an attempt to use the existing "Suzanne" monkey head in Blender to make an animatable character... I quickly discovered I needed to totally rebuild the head.. the default Blender object is not well suited for shapekey (RVK's for us old-timers) deformation. I rebuilt the head to have circular loops for the mouth and eyes.. I modeled a half face and then built half-face expressions joining them in various combinations flipping and mirroring as needed. I then used the RVK1 to RVK2 script to apply the various shapekeys to a base head. (It was critical inthis process to always keep the same number of verts in all the joined heads.. - removing doubles along the center of the face.)

The rig is built on older Blender technology and does not make use of many newer features, however it is pretty functional...You may want to turn off subdivision surfaces for the model to speed up the interface.

if you select the head, and check the action window you will find the shapekey sliders.... "Scared" is turned all the way up...

If you have any questions, post them.. I will try to give meaningful answers...

  2. i released a realistic facial animation setup in May on blenderartists. it never gets mentioned in the same sentence as ludwig or mancandy though i believe it is the most advanced facial animation setup using blendshapes available to blender users. even though a lot of the shapes are not perfect, it should serve as a reference.
