Geometry Nodes Workshop November 2023

0

One week after this year’s Blender Conference, the geometry nodes team came together in Amsterdam to discuss many design topics that affect the future of geometry nodes.

Let me pick some of the highlights - you can read the full list in the report by Jaqcues Lucke.

  • Handling volumetric data in geometry nodes.
  • Using Gizmos for interactive viewport input into geometry nodes setups. This is more complex than it sounds since the team wants to support "crazyspace" transformation where non-linear changes by geometry nodes could cause the gizmo to become disconnected from the geometry it's modifying.
  • Baking outside of simulation zones, and preparation for a new post-4.0 "Bake" node. Also Subframe baking, and how to align baked simulations of different subframe rates.
  • Menu Switch Node which acts as a 'case/switch' in programming languages.
  • Replacement-Based Procedural Modelling, allowing users to work on smaller changes locally that are then inserted into the large geometry. This makes creating reusable blocks easier and will improve performance on complex meshes as well.
  • Modal Node Tools - allowing for nodes that take and store user input once.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
